Japonisme

Japonisme is a French term describing the influence of Japanese art and design on Western European artists during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The movement emerged following the reopening of trade with Japan in 1858. The term was first coined by French art critic and collector Philippe Burty in 1872 to characterize this widespread aesthetic trend.
