Hugo Grotius

Hugo Grotius (1583–1645) was a Dutch humanist, diplomat, lawyer, and statesman who also worked as a poet and playwright. Born in Delft and educated at Leiden University, he became a noted figure in theology and philosophy. Following his imprisonment at Loevestein Castle for his role in Dutch religious policy controversies, he escaped to France, where he authored the majority of his significant scholarly works.
