Carlos Manuel

Carlos Manuel de Céspedes del Castillo was a Cuban revolutionary, lawyer, and plantation owner who served as the first President of Cuba in Arms. In 1868, he declared Cuban independence and freed his slaves, an act that initiated the Ten Years' War against Spanish colonial rule. His leadership played a foundational role in the long struggle for Cuban sovereignty that eventually concluded in 1902.
